The Perils of Ranching
Leslie has run all around the ranch looking for Kyle, but he remains nowhere to be found. He may still be at home so to find out for sure she heads for Aunt Celeste, his mother. Celeste, the Mom of the group, a Mom's Mom, was heavier and larger boobed than all the rest. She was always very patient, and kind, probably the result of raising three boys.
Milo and Dillon, Kyle's little brothers, had been spawned from Satan himself. They say that raising a child takes a village, and in this case it remains true, because no one could handle more than a few hours with them. It made Leslie into a hardened criminal. She tried to baby sit once but when they found them she had hog tied the boys to a post behind the barn. She loved her cousins but she could very easily see them all in prison.
The side door to the hotel opens into a long dark corridor, the wooden floor shines like glass, the doors on each side line up perfectly symmetrical, and way down at the other end, at the business offices she sees her Aunt Mary leaning on the door. She slips in behind her without a sound.
Celeste stands at her desk, and they speak quietly, "Mary I'm not doing this to be an asshole."
Mary's head drops. She takes off her hat.
"You know we all want to make this work..."
"I know."
"Your Dad's idea sounds great but..."
"But what?"
"But Mary it was a different time thirty years ago. People don't want to be cowboys anymore. This idea's just not realistic. At some point we have to start turning a profit."
"Yeah, I know, but we have to have some things in place before any of that makes sense. Everyone says it takes a while to get started..."
"Mary, we haven't started to level off spending yet. Let alone start trending upwards. We can't just keep pouring money into this, it's not working."
"What does Loretta say?"
"I haven't talked to her yet, she doesn't want to let you down Mary. She thinks we can just go on forever like this. Your dad's getting 8 more calves this weekend. That's a whole 'nother herd. We have six cowboys who are gonna stay. Four of them'll be women, which means we have to fix the bathrooms. We have over a hundred and fifty thousand dollars invested in cattle and we don't even have a working ranch yet."
"Alright..."
"My dad says we're headed straight down the toilet."
"It'll come around."
"Mary, four more ranches are up for sale this week. Four old guys died doing this. What do you call a success?"
Mary turns and walks off in huff, revealing Leslie in the light of the office. Celeste stares at her, then begins to motion for her, "Hey baby, come here. I need a hug."
Leslie walks to her and hugs her a big long hug. Leslie squeezes and squeezes, expecting Celeste to let go but she doesn't. Finally when she lets go, she flops into her chair with complete disregard.
